QUICK LOOK:Before he joined the cast of NBC's recently relaunched "American Gladiators" and began wielding gigantic Q-tip shaped battle thingies, Alex Castro, the drop-dead gorgeous massive mound of muscle, was wielding more "personal" and impressive clubs as a highly-paid gay porn model. Much of the overnight controversy over Alex's history in Porn Valley for his work at Colt as "Elian Cortez" but actually Alex Castro posed as, well, "Alex Castro", for a number of muscle worship studios, Playgirl, and his recent star turn in Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity.

QUICK LOOK:Little to none of the initial reaction to President Obama's
nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court has focused on gay
rights issues, largely because her own judicial record is apparently
void on the subject. That said, there are aspects to her selection that
speak to the limits of identity politics, both for the GLBT left and,
in opposition, on the conservative right. Since the resignation
announcement by Justice David Souter -- himself a lifelong bachelor
long rumored to be gay -- some gay rights advocates have voiced their
hopes that the president would pick the first-ever openly gay nominee
to the high court. But if news accounts have been accurate, neither of
two lesbian Stanford law professors -- Kathleen Sullivan and Pamela
Karlan -- made Obama's list of top four possibilities. For many
of the same reasons that the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund advocates
for openly gay legislators, cabinet secretaries and the like, there
would no doubt be enormous symbolism to an openly gay or lesbian
justice, in addition to the inclusion of that person's unique life
experiences into the mix of judicial viewpoints.

QUICK LOOK:The elite Spanish swimming club FERCA Valencia, made up of 25 athletes have posed for a calendar to raise funds to cover activities of the club. The idea for the calendar emerged this summer after the team managed excellent results at the Spanish Swimming Championships in Barcelona. Disappointed by poor coverage of the event, team members came to the conclusion to do something that "calls attention" and arouses people's interest. The photos were shot in Barcelona by prestigious photographer Mark Sunday. (*Translated from Spanish*) (Photos available via link)

QUICK LOOK:Police are investigating as a possible anti-gay hate crime the brutal murder of gay French tourist Gregor Landouar outside a well-known gay hangout shortly after the biggest Gay Pride parade in world history -- indeed, only a few blocks from where the parade happened. Landouar was visiting São Paulo for the Pride festivities and had met three other gay men at Ritz and the four of them were heading out to another gay hangout when four men dressed in "skater clothing" approached them without saying anything and stabbed Landouar repeatedly, fleeing afterwards. Folha also reports, quite sadly, that despite the media attention here, the French government has still not been able to locate Landouar's family in France to notify them of his death.

QUICK LOOK:Big gay news at Gay News Watch. Starting immediately, an RSS subscription feed is now available, but that's not even the most exciting part. Gay News Watch has partnered with a fantastic company called MuseStorm to create headline ticker "widgets" that you can use to add Gay News Watch headlines to your blog, website or MySpace-type online profile. You can create your own Gay News Watch widget by clicking on the "RSS / HEADLINE WIDGET" link you'll see in the righthand navigation bar.
The ticker will scroll the last 20 headlines on Gay News Watch, which means you'll always be displaying the breaking news from the last 24 hours. (For an example, check out the righthand column on the Citizen Crain blog, written by your humble editor here at the Watch.) By simply pasting a snippet of code into your blog, website or online profile, you can be your own gay news service.
And even that's not all. (OK, I'm starting to sound like a QVC salesman, so sue me.) With a click of your mouse you can also create Gay News Watch headline ticker desktop widgets, either from Yahoo or Google. Again, more details by clicking on the "RSS / HEADLINE WIDGET" link to the right.
There's more good stuff where that came from. Soon you'll be able to download Gay News Watch desktop widgets for your Mac Dashboard, Vista Gadget, mobile phone and even your favorite instant message application.
OK enough with the sales claptrap. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Some of the comments in response to the video upload on YouTube expressed surprise that a gospel singer would use profanity in response to the charges. QUICK LOOK:Last night Fox premiered the hotly anticipated “Moment of Truth,” and the premise is simple: Ask people a series of more and more intrusive questions in front of loved ones. The more personal the question, the greater the potential of cash reward, and answers are gauged against a previous polygraph test. The final question out of 21 is worth $500,000, which I am sure must involve cunnilingus with reptiles or some such. Predictably, it didn’t take long for the questions to go gay. The first contestant was former pro football player Ty Keck, a strapping young man whose angular jaw could probably cut glass. Walberg asked what many often wonder about pro athletes and what goes on in locker rooms. (*Video available via link*)

QUICK LOOK:I have a sickeningly familiar feeling in my stomach, and the feeling deepens with every interaction with the Obama team on these issues. They want them to go away. They want us to go away. Here we are, in the summer of 2009, with gay servicemembers still being fired for the fact of their orientation. Here we are, with marriage rights spreading through the country and world and a president who cannot bring himself even to acknowledge these breakthroughs in civil rights, and having no plan in any distant future to do anything about it at a federal level. Here I am, facing a looming deadline to be forced to leave my American husband for good, and relocate abroad because the HIV travel and immigration ban remains in force and I have slowly run out of options (unlike most non-Americans with HIV who have no options at all).

QUICK LOOK:You've seen it on every morning show, Twitter feed, and culture blog. ChatRoulette is the opportunity to meet strangers' penises — and, as any experience will prove, one in 10 strangers are displaying their penises — over the Internet in a game of cam-to-cam gunplay. It's a "craze" (or not). It's addictive (it is). It's perverse (totally!). It's also where we log on to find a few of our favorite types of homosexuals. Rather than worry about the five people we'll meet in heaven, we wanted to know about the five types of gays we'll meet on ChatRoulette. Because we live in The Now. So just who are these queers pointing their cameras at their faces and genitals as they interface with people they've never met, and will probably never see again?
1. Sexually confused older gentlemen with a tendency to look for love in all the wrong places.
2. Stuffy, ambitious types whose days are filled with long work hours and few escapes.
3. Budding porn stars.
4. Frantic lesbian moms.
5. Exhibitionist queens who crave attention.

QUICK LOOK:It’s that time of year again when the world seems festive, happy and gay. But for LGBT and questioning teens, the holidays can also be hell. The Trevor Project – the nation’s only 24/7 free, confidential suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ teens (866-4-U-TREVOR) – recently held their 10th annual Cracked Xmas event in Los Angeles honoring Ellen DeGeneres and Clear Channel Radio Los Angeles – raising more than $463,000 to keep the non-profit going. Jodie Foster was among the celebrities who participated in the powerful, funny and moving event, and both she and Ellen conveyed powerful messages of compassion and hope for LGBTQ teens.

QUICK LOOK:I have been notified by mail that Flavaworks owner Phillip Bleicher was suing mwah for libel to the tune of $250,000. Good luck. I have a hard time getting $2.50 together much less $250,000, and you can quote me on it. The Chicago Department of Public Health recently released a report on the latest rate of syphilis and HIV infections in that city in its Winter 2006 report. In their findings, they detailed unsafe sexual practices conducted by FlavaWorks, where young gay black and Latin men engage in sexual acts for the enjoyment of viewers who pay a membership fee to watch. After fleeing to Miami, Bleicher became the subject of a NBC 6 investigation in May that revealed he was operating an adult business in the middle of a Miami residential neighborhood. NBC 6 discovered they were operating a hardcore live internet sex business with cameras installed in rooms where customers around the world can pay to watch the men who live there have sex with each other. It’s bad enough that Bleicher is a white man profiting on the sex of young Black and Latino men. That alone makes my blood boil. But there is a reason why all of these allegations and investigations are being launched against Flavaworks… something just ain’t right and sooner or later the truth will come out. Don’t hate on me for reporting it.

QUICK LOOK:Some outspoken African American clergy have rejected the moral vision of black Christianity by fueling anti-gay prejudice in their opposition to the Matthew Shepard Act. These African American preachers are more interested in the media spotlight than in honoring the black Christian tradition of justice. Poised for a vote in the Senate, the Matthew Shepard Act extends federal hate crime protections to citizens who are violently victimized because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Intending to shift public opinion against this bill, a few conservative African-American pastors are working overtime — through protests and provocative advertisements — to spread the false message that this legislation will criminalize them for condemning gay people.

QUICK LOOK:A Minnesota court will probably reject the attempt of Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho) to withdraw the guilty plea stemming from his arrest in a Minneapolis airport men's room, and rightly so. That doesn't mean that the sting operation that led to his predicament was legitimate. Craig denied at the time -- and continues to deny -- that he solicited sex from the officer through these gestures. It's a real shame, then, that instead of fighting the charges, Craig mailed in a guilty plea to disorderly conduct -- seven weeks after the arrest. Craig should have been able to beat the charges because none of the gestures, in and of themselves, constitutes a crime.

QUICK LOOK:Bob Shrum's book is really sort of a pile of unexploded ordnance, and the person who comes off as most indifferent to questions of gay rights isn't Edwards, but Bill Clinton. "Clinton, Kerry reported at the time, did suggest blunting Bush's appeal to cultural conservatives with a reprise of Clinton's Sister Souljah moment in 1992 when he'd denounced her call for violence against whites — and done it as conspicuously as possible in front of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition. Kerry, Clinton ventured, should consider defying Democratic interest groups by endorsing the Bush proposal for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage." Shrum reports that "this was a flip-flop too far for Kerry."

QUICK LOOK:A convincing trove of data showing that HIV is again spreading in
larger numbers among gay and bisexual men, in the U.S. and abroad. The
question remains what we -- the government, HIV/AIDS group and we gay
and bi men -- are going to do about it. Since tomorrow is World AIDS Day, there's no better time to make a few informed suggestions. One thing is clear: The old ideas of the past, simply handing out
condoms and such, are no longer working. It’s time for new ideas and
new energy. If anything, the data on rising HIV infections is an
indictment of the way most agencies have tackled prevention among gay
and bisexual men. For one thing, it’s long past time to trust gay and bisexual men with
real information about the risk of exposure associated with particular
sexual behavior.

QUICK LOOK:There may be three Democrats in the "top tier" of presidential
candidates, but on gay issues we now have a clear frontrunner. Judging
by the position papers put out by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last
week, it's clear that rival John Edwards is willing to go further on
gay issues and is much stronger on the specifics. It’s true that a memoir out last week by political consultant Bob Shrum
claims Edwards expressed his discomfort around “those people” — that
would be us — when he first ran for U.S. Senate in 1988. But whether
he’s evolved or converted since those days, he's got a comfortable lead
on gay rights now.

The latest (gay and unsourced) rumors on the internets gaining some currency across message boards and blogs describe the "real" reason behind Bow Wow's departure from super-producer Jermaine Dupri to begin collaborating with Omarion on their upcoming Duo album: The teen heart throbs are "feeling each other" and are a couple.

QUICK LOOK:Americans who understand basic principles of justice have no problems with the hate crime bill known as the Matthew Shepard Act. This legislation, now awaiting a vote in the Senate, would finally protect the many citizens who are targeted for violence simply because of their sexual orientation and gender identity, and it would provide law enforcement the necessary resources to investigate bias-fueled brutality. Unfortunately, some clergy across the nation have joined together to oppose this bill in an aggressive and divisive manner. For instance, conservative African-American leaders - most notably Bishop Harry Jackson of Maryland's Hope Christian Church - have been inundating the media and faith communities with the message that this legislation will allow police to storm into worship services and arrest clergy if they speak against being gay.

QUICK LOOK:Sports blog The Big Lead is buzzing about this morning's Howard Stern Show: "Around 8:55 this morning, Barrett Long, an a male adult film actor, was on Howard Stern. He admitted to accepting oral from males for cash when times were rough, but insisted that he’s straight. He also said a member of the Dallas Cowboys once went down on him. Refused to mention the player’s name. Artie Lange instantly yelled 'Tony Romo!' but Long denied it was him. Then Long asked about Emmitt Smith, to which Long also said no. It almost sounded like Long recanted the whole thing when Artie asked about Michael Irvin, but we’re not 100 percent sure if he was kidding or not."

QUICK LOOK:A heterosexual tells the story of how he got experimental on a visit to
a gay sauna: I'm writing about my first and, more than likely only
visit to a gay sauna. It was to explore a side of my sexuality which,
for many years now, I'd been curious about. When I was 18 (now quite a
bit older) I joined the jeers when two male schoolmates drunkenly
snogged each other on a night out. Inside, part of me I wished I was
one of them. Years of mulling things over, the occasional mild
dalliance and, on the night, six pints, climaxed in me visiting a gay
sauna. I'd read about "cruising" before, and read about bars being
"cruisey" but never experienced it. Simply put, if at any point catch
somebody's eye and the gaze is held then it's generally on. No codified
rehearsal of buying drinks and dating a few times – you just get it on.
The thing that's really interesting from a straight guy's point of view
is that in this environment you're seen as an object of desire instead
of the pursuer. I'm not the kind of guy who gets admiring glances from
women in general, so to be looked at like that was a pleasant surprise.

QUICK LOOK:The scandal surrounding Washington state Rep. Richard Curtis is
shaping up as a real doozie, and the gay blogosphere is well-lathered
to pass on every juicy detail. There are some interesting twists,
however, that are showing the predictable pack of salivating bloggers
are victims of "the big H" -- that would be hypocrisy -- themselves. Lost in all the joyous reveling in the salacious personal details of
this man's private sex life is that the only reason we know anything
about it is that he went to police as the victim of felony extortion. It's also interesting to see how these same bloggers have reacted to news that
Curtis enjoys wearing women's lingerie. Cross-dressers and trasvestites
(those who have a sexual fetish wearing clothing of the opposite sex)
are both types of transgenderism, the T in our happy GLBT community.
