The publishing group responsible for the Washington Blade, Genre
magazine and eight other gay publications announced today that its
departing president would be replaced by three "co-presidents." Peter
Polimino said in a statement released by Window Media that his
departure as president was for "personal reasons"; he took the post in
January 2006 when company co-founder William Waybourn retired.
"For personal reasons, it’s with mixed feelings that I step down from my post as president of Window Media," Polimino said in the statement. "I’ve had an incredible ride helping to build the business to what it is today."
Polimino's three replacements are all existing managers of the company
who will continue on in their previous roles. Mike Kitchens is Window
Media's chief operating officer, Steve Myers is chief financial
officer, and Bill Kapfer is responsible for marketing and Genre's
publisher. Kitchens and Myers are based in Atlanta, where the group
publishes Southern Voice newspaper and David Magazine. Kapfer is in New
York.
The three co-presidents will report to David Unger, the company's
chairman and managing partner of Avalon Equity, a New York-based
venture capital firm that invested in the company in 2001. "It gives me great pleasure to announce the promotion of three accomplished and admired media executives to the joint Presidency of Window Media," Unger said in the statement. "The focus on teamwork has been our guiding principle, and the appointment of Mike, Steve and Bill as co-presidents is the epitome of that philosophy."
The Window Media group controlled by Avalon includes four companies:
Window Media LLC publishes the Washington Blade, Southern Voice and
their associated websites; Unite Media LLC publishes Express Gay News
and 411 Magazine in Fort Laurderdale, as well as David-Atlanta; HX
Media, a joint venture with Unite, publishes the New York Blade, HX, HX
Philly and New England-based IN Newsweekly; Genre Inc. publishes Genre
Magazine. Window Media previously published the Houston Voice, which
was shuttered except for its website earlier this year.
Chris Crain, editor of Gay News Watch, co-founded Window Media with Waybourn and departed last fall to move to Rio De Janeiro to be with his partner, who is Brazilian.
