U.S. President George W. Bush has drawn fire from gays for backing a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, anti-gay judicial nominees and on other issues.

Rove's position was that the marriage amendments arose organically within eleven states, including political crucial Ohio , and that the Bush campaign wasn't involved in any way. Not true, a former Republican National Committee chairman now says. Ken Mehlman, who was Bush's campaign manager in 2004 and RNC chairman, says in an interview in The Atlantic that he knew Rove "had been working with Republicans to make sure that anti-gay initiatives and referenda would appear on November ballots in 2004 and 2006 to help Republicans." We wrote about that in our book The Architect, noting that despite Rove's public pronouncements, his active strategy was to divide and conquer by microtargeting religious conservatives and turn out in big numbers against gay marriage - and for George W. Bush. At the time, Mehlman - like others on the Bush team -- was among the party's most active opponents of gay marriage. Now in private life, Mehlman supports gay marriage. In The Atlantic interview, he acknowledges that he is gay and acknolwedged that some critics will see his past actions as hypocritical. Mehlman says he hopes that the GOP will become more accepting of gay marriage. And, ever the strategist, he offers a provocative idea: Why don't gay voters form common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called "the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now."

One was to create a video purporting to show the Iraqi dictator having sex with a teenage boy, according to two former CIA officials familiar with the project. “It would look like it was taken by a hidden camera,” said one of the former officials. “Very grainy, like it was a secret videotaping of a sex session.” The idea was to then “flood Iraq with the videos,” the former official said. Another idea was to interrupt Iraqi television programming with a fake special news bulletin. An actor playing Hussein would announce that he was stepping down in favor of his (much-reviled) son Uday. “I’m sure you will throw your support behind His Excellency Uday,” the fake Hussein would intone. The spy agency’s Office of Technical Services collaborated on the ideas, which also included inserting fake “crawls” -- messages at the bottom of the screen -- into Iraqi newscasts. The agency actually did make a video purporting to show Osama bin Laden and his cronies sitting around a campfire swigging bottles of liquor and savoring their conquests with boys, one of the former CIA officers recalled, chuckling at the memory. The actors were drawn from “some of us darker-skinned employees,” he said. Eventually, “things ground to a halt,” the other former officer said, because no one could come to agreement on the projects. They also faced strong opposition from James Pavitt, then head of the agency’s Operations Division, and his deputy, Hugh Turner, who “kept throwing darts at it.”

We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.” Citing historical reasons, then-President George Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage to a heterosexual union but leave open the possibility that states could allow civil unions. “Marriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence of society,” Bush said in 2004. The development is intriguing in part because the informant they were after was thought to be secretly gay—a fact that gave intelligence agents leverage in their efforts to turn him against his conservative Islamist circle. But the case may also help answer one of the long-standing mysteries of the 9/11 narrative: why a terrorist known to one part of the U.S. government wasn’t captured by other parts before he boarded a plane and helped carry out the most devastating attacks on the country. "This rule protects the right of medical providers to care for their patients in accord with their conscience," says Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt in a statement. The focus of the new ruling is on protecting health care workers and institutions that oppose abortion and a broad interpretation of "sterilization." "Ultimately, the central question is whether organizations and individuals should be required to participate in, pay for, provide coverage for, or refer for services that directly contradict their deeply held religious or moral beliefs and convictions," the Catholic Health Association noted in a Sept. 24 letter supporting the rule.

Not so much over the idea that a single, 43-year-old man who recently moved to New York's Chelsea neighborhood turned out to be gay — welcome to the cabaret, ol' chum! — but for his role in a party that has exploited same-sex marriage as a wedge issue. In fact, Mehlman came out specifically to help the cause that so many in his party have tried to defeat: He has been working with the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the group fighting California's Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage. Questions about his sexuality arose — as they had during his years in the Bush White House and at the helm of the Republican National Committee — and he decided to finally answer them truthfully. Good for him. I can't join the chorus that has emerged in some parts condemning him for his role in a White House and a party that tried to amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage. Yes, he does have some 'splaining to do — even though the Federal Marriage Amendment ultimately failed, some states went on to change their constitutions. And he was also George W. Bush's political director under Karl Rove, who worked to get anti-gay measures on ballots as a way of bringing conservatives to the polls and thus help GOP candidates.

Instead, seething with contempt for the President of the United States, she faults the Bush Administration for holding that the new federal energy law prevents states from enacting their own fuel-efficiency regulations. And she commends the Golden State’s Republican governor for daring to defy this order. Commending him not for his record on gay issues, but for standing up to the Bush Administration.
