Miami Herald, Posted: 1/29/2010, 6:37 PM A Fort Lauderdale couple is accused of twice attacking a man, and on Friday police labeled the attack a hate crime. Ricardo Rivera, 53, and Bedsaida Rivera, 49, are each charged with one count of battery. Having their attack labeled a hate crime doesn't change the charges, Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Sgt. Frank Sousa said, but it does mean they face stiffer penalties if found guilty. The first attack happened on Sept. 6 in an apartment building in the 2100 block of Northeast 56th Street. Barry Jones, 45, told police that he heard loud noises and banging coming from the neighboring unit. He went over and asked the group to keep down the noise, which led to an argument between him and Ricardo Rivera. Then Rivera began hitting him, according to an arrest affidavit. "Jones stated that River knocked him to the ground and up against the wall," the affidavit said. "Jones stated that Rivera was yelling `faggot' over and over while hitting him." Afterward, Jones went to his doctor, who discovered a torn rotator cuff.

Juan A Martinez Matos, 26, is accused of killing Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado in November in the city of Cayey. Territorial psychologist Rafael Cabrera reported his findings to Judge Miriam Camila Justino during a hearing in Caguas yesterday. It is alleged that Matos killed the cross-dressing teenager when he discovered he was a man. Mercado's body was found burnt and dismembered at a roadside. Gay rights activists in the country hope that Matos will be tried under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which offers federal protection against hate crimes motivated by homophobia and transphobia. The law was signed by President Barack Obama in October. Puerto Rico governor Luis Fortuño has drawn anger from gay campaigners for not publicly mentioning the case.
Seattle Post Intelligencer, Posted: 1/8/2010, 12:32 PM A man told police he was beaten Sunday night in the parking lot of the Seattle Filipino Community Center because he is gay, and police arrested the man who allegedly made homophobic threats after the assault. That man, 22, posted bond and was released from King County Jail on Monday night. Seattlepi.com is not naming the man because he has not been charged. The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of Martin Luther King Way South. The victim was with a female friend and was returning from her vehicle when he passed the suspect and another man. The second man walked behind the victim, and the suspect allegedly walked in front of him, blocking his path. "Both suspects them punched the victim with closed fists on both sides of the victim's face causing pain and discomfort," South Precinct Officer Joe Hadley wrote in his report. Police said the men then yelled a homophobic insult. Security from the community center intervened and held the suspect at the scene. The other man fled, yelling a homophobic slur as he left. Police searched the area, but did not find him.
Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, Posted: 1/3/2010, 8:44 AM *VIDEO AFTER JUMP*: A Columbia County man said an anti-gay remark was uttered before he was assaulted and run over outside a New Jersey bar a week ago, according to a televised report. Jesse Allard, 23, of Stillwater, suffered arm and leg injuries and was hospitalized in Paterson after the alleged assault on Dec. 26. In an interview Wednesday on WWOR-TV, Secaucus, N.J., Allard said he went to the Trackside Bar & Grill in Butler, to celebrate his birthday. Inside he complimented a patron on the coat he was wearing and that led to the alleged assault. “He called me a fag and he told me don’t ever touch him again,” Allard told television reporter Mike Gilliam, who interviewed him in a hospital bed. “So I was just like, ‘Well, I’m sorry I’m just complimenting your coat,’ ” Allard said. When asked by Gilliam if Allard was “trying to come on” to the patron, Allard responded, “No.” Allard said a man who he believed was the bar owner wanted him out and dragged him from the establishment to a nearby parking lot, according to the report. In the lot the man held Allard’s arms while another man punched Allard in the face. Someone took Allard’s cell phone, smashed it and threw it away, according to the report.

for the public’s help to find her. Known as “Letty,” Martinez was found dying early yesterday morning in
front of the neighborhood Catholic church on Michigan Avenue in the
Alviso area. Discovered by a neighbor, her clothes and belongings were
scattered over two blocks, just down the street from Bautista’s
residence. Nena Estrada spoke Tuesday. She said: "We had seen my sister's shoe and
her shirt in the middle of the street, and they were saying there was a
girl in front of the church with a tattoo 'Jennifer' on her."
New York Times, Posted: 4/30/2009, 6:40 AM Victims of violence who are gay would have new federal protections under a hate-crimes bill approved by the House. The vote was 249 to 175, with most Democrats voting in favor and most Republicans against. The bill defines hate crimes as those motivated by prejudice and based on a victim’s race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. The measure would provide grants for state and local authorities to investigate and prosecute hate crimes , and it would empower the federal government to prosecute cases if states asked for Washington’s help or were reluctant to exercise their own authority. The Senate has not yet scheduled a vote on the bill, which President Obama supports.

Idris has been charged with second-degree attempted robbery and malicious harassment, the state's hate crime statute, in the March 10 attack. In court documents, police claim Idris was riding on a Metro coach near the 9000 block of Rainier Avenue South when he slapped the man in the back of the head. He then allegedly asked, using a slur, if he was homosexual. The man disembarked the bus moments later, followed by Idris and an associate. Police say Idris again approached him, telling the man that homosexuality violates his religion. Confronted by Idris, the man again said he was not gay. Idris then, police assert, "grabbed the victim around his neck and said 'Give me $10 and your cell phone and I'll let you go.'"

The two men, Samson, 22, and Kevin, 22, said they left a campfire to walk along the beach during what was supposed to be a stress-free getaway. But the walk itself was anything but stress free -- the two were beaten unconscious late Saturday night. When Samson and Kevin finally came to, the two nursing students knew just how serious their injuries were. "The whole event -- I really don't remember a lot, because I sustained a lot of head trauma," said Samson. "I've never had a face trauma like this or anything like that. It's pretty bad," Kevin said. Thinking back to the attack, the two men said they believe it was their sexual orientation that made them a target. "All of the sudden, someone asked if were gay, called us 'fags,' then started punching us," said Samson. The victims said three or four young men dressed in black attacked them, letting loose punch after punch.

sentenced to life in prison in the death of a 25-year-old gay man. After
nearly two days of deliberation, jurors returned a guilty verdict on
Friday for 23-year-old Joseph Eli Bearden. Prosecutors had been pushing
for a first-degree murder conviction. Bearden's defense attorney called
the verdict a partial victory because the death penalty is now off the
table. Bearden is one of two men charged with the 2007 murder of Ryan Skipper (pictured).
Prosecutors say Bearden and 22-year-old William David Brown Jr. fatally
stabbed Skipper and stole his Chevrolet Aveo. Brown is still awaiting
trial. Skipper's death received much attention from gay rights advocates, many of whom believe the murder was a hate crime.

I even said ‘goodbye.’” The barrage also hit another patron, James Nickelson, 39, who police listed as a Houston resident, but bar patrons said Monday they believed he had recently moved to the island.

And to suggest that if Larry had only been encouraged to stifle his orientation and/or gender expression, then we'd all be better off?! How unbelievably offensive! And again: Dreadfully dangerous! These "pro-family" figures who ignore the very real, very tragic problem of anti-LGBT bias in public schooling act as if harassment against a kid because his or her orientation, identity, or expression is equally as worrisome as the orientation, identity, or expression itself. They see an LGBT teen's choice to live openly and honestly as a form of bullying. And in doing so, these anti-LGBT voices both overlook a real world problem that we as a society could come together and actually solve, as well as give a pass to anyone who cites their personal, typically faith-based discomfort with LGBT people as a valid reason for utilizing teases, taunts, punches, or even guns. That is not "true tolerance": It is true negligence.
