The Advocate, Posted: 4/13/2010, 3:34 PM Undercover phone calls reveal that when young gay people call into the nationally syndicated radio show Dawson McAllister Live to discuss their problems, representatives who believe homosexuality is comparable to “adultery, theft or murder” counsel callers to seek a “cure” through God and direct them to “ex-gay” groups. Greg Kimball at KnowThyNeighbor.org wanted to investigate how the show, geared toward teenagers on Top 40 radio stations nationwide, would handle a youth caller questioning his sexuality. According to his own account, the 24-year-old pretended to be a 16-year-old boy this past Sunday and spoke with a representative for 20 minutes. “The first thing he told me (which he told me several times throughout our conversation) is that they get a ton of calls like this,” said Kimball. “He then asked if I had been raised religiously. I told him no, and that is where things began to explode. He told me that it is common for ‘children raised with no God to question their sexuality.’ He went on to say that ‘if I embraced God, I could be cured.’ He continued, comparing homosexuality to ‘alcoholism or pornography or drug addiction.’ He said that ‘homosexuality was not natural.’ He then quoted several Bible verses, saying that homosexuality was just as bad as ‘adultery, theft, or murder.’" In a follow up call, Kimball, still posing as a 16-year-old boy, spoke with a different representative, who directed him to “ex-gay” groups like Exodus International and Live Hope Ministries.
Associated Press (AP), Posted: 4/8/2010, 7:21 AM California lawmakers narrowly advanced a bill Tuesday that would repeal a state law designed to find the causes and cures of homosexuality. The law, written in 1950, classifies homosexuals as "sexual deviants" and requires the state Department of Mental Health to conduct research on "deviations conducive to sex crimes against children." The research would be used to help identify potential sex offenders. The bill moved out of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety on a 4-0 vote, with one Democrat and two Republican members abstaining from voting. They said the law's reference to homosexuality should be removed but that they want the state to continue researching sex crimes. California put the law on the books as a response to public outcry after a series of sex crimes in Los Angeles, which included the rape and murder of a 6-year-old girl. The murderer, who openly confessed his crime, was not gay. "Even then, there was no legal justification to say that gay people needed to be understood and cured in the exact same way as sexual predators who rape and kill children," said Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, who sponsored the bill. "For us to leave it there would be wrong," she said. Lowenthal said California has not conducted research into homosexuality for decades, but did release several reports that examined hormone levels, physical characteristics and parental relationships of its subjects. The American Psychiatric Association listed homosexuality as a mental disorder until 1973.

Watchdogs say the cable news network mishandled the issue when host Kyra Phillips asked whether homosexuality was a “problem” in need of a “cure,” and booked guests including discredited “ex-gay” therapist Richard Cohen. “Homosexuality: Is it a problem in need of a cure? Grabs your attention, doesn’t it?” asked Phillips at the opening of the segment. Critics assailed CNN for giving the idea a national platform. “Instead of discussing the merits of the proposed bill and why ‘finding cures’ for being gay don't work, Phillips and CNN gave credence to this bogus ‘therapy’ and allowed ‘ex-gay activist’ Richard Cohen to spew his lies and promote new research (old studies that have been discredited),” said activist blog Queers United. Also included among the guests was California assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, lead sponsor of the repeal bill. The assembly’s public safety committee approved the bill Tuesday. The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association found fault primarily with the lack of gay voices in the segment.

The move is in response to the 60,000-strong American Academy of Pediatrics' 2002 adoption of guidelines in support of gay rights. At the end of March, the ACP send out this letter to an unknown number of school superintendents. Despite its name, ACP is not a institute of higher learning. Nor is it a professional organization for pediatricians. It is an advocacy group dedicated to political goals which is using an authoritative-sounding name to fool the unaware. Members of ACP's board include several members of the 'ex-gay' National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), such as Dean Board, past president of NARTH, Joe Nicolosi, founder of NARTH, and George Rekers, member of NARTH's "scientific committee". Other board members of the ragtag team include Arthur Goldberg, founder of ex-gay Jewish group JONAH. But the real leader is Michelle Cretella, who currently sits on both the boards of NARTH and ACP. Cretella has devoted her life to watching and writing about the most extreme types of "Gonzo"- style homosexual pornography (which, by the way, is no worse than the most extreme forms of heterosexual sex, and, in most cases, much tamer) in an obvious effort to single out homosexuals as some sort of rabid, depraved creatures unable to control their abnormal behavior, and by association, unfit to be good parents.

More than 600 people gathered at Skyline Wesleyan Church on Campo Road in Rancho San Diego to listen to a series of speakers from Exodus International, an Orlando, Fla.-based Christian organization. The group claims to be “the largest global ministry addressing the issue of faith and same-sex attraction.” The conference, titled “Love Won Out,” was the 60th in a series launched in 1998 and originally conducted by the conservative evangelical group Focus on the Family. Meanwhile, about 100 people gathered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. Sponsored by a four-year-old, New York-based group called Truth Wins Out, the counter-conference’s existence is almost entirely dedicated to rebutting the contentions of conservative religious groups that homosexuality is a behavior that can be a “cured,” said executive director Wayne Besen.

The leader of JONAH, Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality, Arthur Abba Goldberg, is now also serving as President of his Jersey City temple. He was sent to federal prison 20 years ago for a conspiracy to defraud the United States of America. Additionally, Goldberg is presently the Executive Secretary of NARTH- the National Association for the Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. The group hopes to heal “unwanted homosexuality” through “therapeutic care.” One more group he supervises is PATH- Positive Alternatives to Homosexuality- a coalition of religious, ministerial, and ex-gay groups promoting “non-gay alternatives to homosexual lifestyles.” He is their President. Goldberg, who reinvented himself in 2000 as the founder of JONAH, was found guilty in 1989 of numerous felonies in multiple jurisdictions. The charges ranged from federal mail and wire fraud to conspiracy counts as a result of a bogus bond writing scheme. K. William O’Connor, the U.S. attorney who put him away, said at his sentencing that Goldberg was “a man who habitually took advantage of people who were economically dependent upon him; that he did not hesitate to lie or cheat or cover up to achieve his criminal aim. His greed has cause incalculable harm...”

Posted: 3/26/2009, 9:23 AM Research published today in the BMC Psychiatry journal shows that a sixth of registered British therapist and psychiatrists have attempted to "cure" patients of homosexuality. Shockingly one psychiatrist who responded to the study justified offering "cures" saying: "the physical act for male homosexuals is physically damaging and is the main reason in this country for AIDS/HIV. It is also perverse." The study led by Michael King of University College London, surveyed 1,400 medical professionals but finds that there is very little evidence that therapy can really help change whether a person is lesbian, gay or bisexual. ""There is very little evidence to show that attempting to treat a person's homosexual feelings is effective and in fact it can actually be harmful," said Professor King .

“We shall do all it takes to eliminate the practice in Uganda.” Matovu, who said he abandoned the practice two weeks ago, asserted:

I was in Tenterden, the Kentish village where I was brought up and to which I have lately returned, working at a nearby aerodrome as a helicopter pilot. I was waiting my turn for a chatty Latvian to apply the hot towels and razor. A handsome young dad entered with a small, fair-haired boy at his side. The man took a seat and hoisted the wide-eyed child proudly on to his knee. The first haircut, I speculated inwardly, as an unfamiliar fatherly glow and feeling of mild envy swept over me. I could not tear my attention away from the mirrored reflections. From time to time, the dad leant forward as they waited and whispered close to his son’s ear, tenderly kissing his fair head. Touching stuff.
