Business School junior Jason Raymond, Armstrong’s running mate, was also sworn in as MSA vice president. Elected in a landslide victory last Friday, LGBT Commission Chair Chris Armstrong of MForward is now the first openly gay MSA president — a fact he said he hopes will have large implications not only for the LGBT community on campus, but also for the greater University community. Armstrong said he hopes that being gay and holding a position as assembly president will demonstrate that any University student can represent the “spirit of Michigan.” In an interview with The Michigan Daily yesterday, Armstrong recalled how he did not expect to ever be elected MSA president, after hiding his identity throughout high school and staying out of the public eye. He admitted that he only came out to a few friends and his parents by the end of his senior year in high school. Elected at the end of his freshman year to be a MSA representative, Armstrong said he was “impressed” by the other representatives and the atmosphere of the MSA Chambers, but never thought he was capable of holding such a leadership position as a gay man. Over the past three months of campaigning and forming MForward, Armstrong said he became even more sure of himself that he was ready to fulfill the role as president, despite his sexual identity. “I think that slowly over the course of the campaign that broke down,” he said. “It shows that MSA can do anything.”
India Today, Posted: 4/2/2010, 11:57 AM The Allahabad High Court on Thursday revoked the decision of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to suspend Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, a reader of Marathi fiction and chairman of the university's modern Indian languages department. AMU vice-chancellor P. K. Abdul Aziz had suspended Siras on February 11 for indulging in homosexual activities in his official residence on the campus. The V-C had said neither he nor the AMU disciplinary committee would ever allow a homosexual to live and work there. The AMU management had also asked Siras to vacate his official residence. While hearing a petition by Siras, justices Sunil Ambwani and Kedar Nath Pandey ordered the university authorities to cancel his suspension and let him take classes and live in the official residence. Though the court did not comment on Siras's sexual inclinations, it asked Aziz to state the grounds on which he had been suspended and whether the disciplinary action was legally valid. Probably aware of Siras's homosexuality, some AMU members had allegedly asked local TV reporters and two camerapersons to conduct a sting operation on him on February 6. This was done despite the Delhi High Court recently decriminalising consensual gay sex.

The last time she'd been there was March 11, the day after her Fulton, Mississippi, high school canceled prom rather than allow her to wear a tuxedo and attend with her girlfriend. She didn't assume last week's spring break would cool things down. She expected stares, dirty looks and cold shoulders, and passing through the doors was daunting. Over these last two weeks, she said, she's had a hard time sleeping, can barely eat, feels anxious and -- until she saw a doctor for help -- often felt like she was "going to throw up." "I've been very nervous about all of this," the 18-year-old Itawamba Agricultural High School senior said. "I don't like being somewhere where everyone hates me." In many ways, she stands in an awkward balance. At least two supporters have offered to rent a stretch limo for Derrick Martin and his boyfriend. Martin asked his principal this year if he could take another male to his senior prom, set for April 17. At first school officials told the 18-year-old that the town of Cochran, with a population of 5,200, wasn’t ready for it. The high school only had a policy that barred bringing a date older than the age of 21, so school officials subsequently told Martin they granted his request. Martin said he pushed to take his boyfriend to the dance after hearing about a girl in Mississippi who asked to take her girlfriend to the prom. Her school eventually canceled the dance rather than allow them to attend together. “Maybe (other gay students) will think if Bleckley County will let them, maybe my school will,” Martin said. School Superintendent Charlotte Pipkin said the move is a first for Bleckley County. Many gay-rights activists are now posting the story on their Facebook pages. And an Atlanta filmmaker said he hopes to document the story.

The ACLU sued in U.S. District Court to force the Itawamba County school district to sponsor the April 2 prom and allow Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. School officials said in court they decided to call off the prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School because McMillen's challenge to the rules had caused disruptions. U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson denied the ACLU's request for a preliminary injunction. Davidson did say in his order that the district had violated McMillen's constitutional rights by denying her request to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. "We consider this a victory," said ACLU Mississippi legal director Kristy Bennett. But Davidson said a private prom parents are now planning will serve the same purpose as the school prom. He wrote in his ruling that "requiring defendants to step back into a sponsorship role at this late date would only confuse and confound the community on the issue."

Christopher Villa, vice president of student services, reported the findings last week in a letter to three students who had lodged complaints against health sciences instructor Bradley Lopez. The campus' student newspaper published Villa's letter Wednesday. "Dr. Lopez engaged in conduct that could result in the creation of a hostile learning environment by unreasonably interfering with students' learning by making insulting comments directed at homosexuals," Villa wrote. He added that while instructors are free to offer opinions that may offend students or be at odds with other professionals, Lopez crossed the line by making statements "unrelated to any legitimate course objective." Lopez's lawyer, Charles Magill, said that only one of the three complaining students was enrolled in Lopez' class and she had misinterpreted his remarks.

The filing by school board attorney Benjamin Griffith states that Itawamba Agricultural High School senior Constance McMillen "wishes to make the defendant district the site for a national constitutional argument over gay and lesbian rights." According to the filing, parents have organized a private prom at a furniture mart in nearby Tupelo. Now that the school district has withdrawn from the event, any constitutional claims are irrelevant, Griffith wrote. ACLU attorney Christine Sun saw information about the private dance in the filing. "Constance has not been invited, so it is clear to me that what is happening is that the school has encouraged a private prom that is not open to all the students," she said. "That's what Constance is fighting for - a prom where everyone can go." McMillen is receiving accolades outside her hometown for her stance. DeGeneres, who is gay, called her part of a new generation of leaders for her stand for gay rights and presented her with a $30,000 college scholarship check from Web site Tonic.com.

Supporters of a bill sponsored by an openly gay Colorado congressman say that the case underscores the need for legislation that guarantees equal treatment for LGBT youth.Democratic Rep. Jared Polis had introduced his bill, The Student Anti-Discrimination Act, in January, but the events in Fulton, Miss. show the timely nature of the proposed measure, supporters say. QUICK LOOK:Sunday’s ombudsman column sparked a healthy discussion about whether The Post should loosen its policies governing when to disclose a person’s sexual orientation. The column dealt with last month’s tragic murder of D.C. middle school principal Brian Betts and The Post’s decision not to reveal he was gay, despite the fact he was “out” to friends and coworkers and although police said publicly that he was homosexual. The Post held firm, even after police subsequently revealed that Betts had met at least one person charged in his murder through a phone-sex chat service. Since the column appeared, a handful of gay and straight Post journalists, including two supervising editors, have contacted me to say they believe there should be a review of the policy governing when to reveal sexual orientation. It’s a good discussion to have. Post policy says: “A person's sexual orientation should not be mentioned unless relevant to the story... When identifying an individual as gay or homosexual, be cautious about invading the privacy of someone who may not wish his or her sexual orientation known.” Defining “relevant” is the challenge. It can be relevant if a closeted gay lawmaker promotes anti-gay legislation. And I felt it was relevant to disclose that Betts was gay, especially because the circumstances of his murder were similar to others locally and nationally.

QUICK LOOK:The prospect of preferential hiring on the basis of homosexuality and transgender identity poses troubling questions. At this point it’s a largely hypothetical issue. In most states employers can fire or refuse to hire LGBTs solely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. So the idea of asking for special preferences is more than akin to the metaphor of beggars acting like choosers. But in the country’s more “progressive” institutions, the notion of gay affirmative action is not so theoretical. At the 2006 annual meeting of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the subject of affirmative action for gay students came up and found some adherents, including an admissions officer at Vermont’s prestigious Middlebury College. The school’s assistant director of admissions told the website Inside Higher Ed that gay students bring “a unique quality,” which is important as the school tries hard not “to be too homogeneous.” Don’t be surprised if, within the next few years, the nation’s top colleges add homosexuality to their list of applicant “attributes,” giving gay students the same leg up that athletes, children of alumni, and some racial minorities also enjoy.
