After frequent hesitations, at one point Cameron pauses and asks for the interview, with the Gay Times, to be concluded. Recently, Cameron has drawn criticism for Conservative MEPs' failure to support a vote condemning a Lithuanian law which has been described as 'homophobic', and is facing growing pressure over the Tory's European representatives' right-wing alliances. Given the Conservatives' introduction of the controversial 'Section 28', a law passed in 1988 which banned the promotion of homosexuality in schools and for which Cameron has since apologised, the Tory party are keen to distance themselves from any accusations of discrimination on the grounds of sexuality. Cameron in particular has been criticised for his record on gay rights, having voted against the repeal of Section 28 in 2003, which passed in spite of the Tory leader's support for the measure. Among first time gay voters, the Conservatives are overwhelmingly the most popular party. Our survey of more than a thousand readers found that 28 per cent said they would vote Labour if a general election was held tomorrow, with the Tories and the Lib Dems following on 25 per cent each. The Greens came fourth with 19 per cent. Only 17 per cent of respondents voted Tory in the last election in 2005. A PinkNews.co.uk poll last June placed David Cameron's party ahead of Labour at 39 per cent compared to 29 per cent, but the Tories have lost their lead since the controversy over their European allies, who have been accused of homophobia. However, their rating among LGBT voters has picked up since our October poll, which found that only 22 per cent would vote for them, compared to 36 per cent for Labour.

The one problem with the policy is its name: Blair used “civil partnerships” to appease the foam-mouthed bigots on the authoritarian Right. But many gay people find the idea of having a “civil partnership” totally crass – and the state’s continued insistence in treating them as second-class citizens quite insulting. Gordon Brown has never been a particularly vocal supporter of equality for gay people. That’s understandable because he was hounded by smears that he was gay (which he isn’t). My hope is that David Cameron, a self-styled “liberal conservative” who has tried to court the votes of gay people, will complete the one good Blair policy and rename civil partnerships as weddings. This may sound Left-wing to some people, but it is actually a very conservative policy. Decades of discrimination against gay people created a promiscuous gay culture of endless one-night-stands and binge drinking, and put thousands of gay people off the Conservative Party, which was seen to be particularly intolerant of homosexuality.
