Politico, Posted: 6/10/2010, 8:01 AM The liberal news site Huffington Post has cut ties with its former Washington Editor at Large, Hilary Rosen, because of Rosen's new role as a consultant for the embattled oil company British Petroleum. Rosen, a Washington figure and former chief music industry lobbyist, now heads the Washington office of the Brunswick Group, which is part of a phalanx of lobbying and communications firms retained by BP to battle Congressional and Administrative retribution and new regulation for its massive Gulf oil spill. "Hilary is no longer our Washington Editor at Large, a mutual decision we recently reached given her involvement with BP," wrote Arianna Huffington in an email today, responding to a query from POLITICO. "However, we still have a great personal relationship. And, of course, Hilary’s work with BP has had zero effect on our coverage of the company or the disaster in the gulf. Comprehensive and hard-hitting, our coverage speaks for itself." Rosen's shift is recent enough that her Huffington Post and Brunswick biographies still describes her as Washington Editor-at-Large. She has not written for the site, however, since January. Huffington Post has covered the spill aggressively and with a sharply anti-BP tone. Headlines this afernoon include, "Size Of The Spill STILL Being Low-Balled" and "'BP Mole Shares The Secrets Of BP's Cleanup Ops."

New York Times, Posted: 5/20/2010, 4:37 PM Starting today, travelers booking hotels through Expedia.com can search for “LGBT-welcoming” hotels or visit Expedia’s new LGBT store. Ten gay-friendly cities are featured on the store along with mini gay guides. Gay and visiting New York? “Pick a gayborhood and simply do a pub crawl.” Are you gay in LA? “You can’t go wrong on Santa Monica Boulevard.” Hmmm, drinking and cruising, is this the gay man’s lot? Expedia has partnered with the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association to find and identify “LGBT-welcoming” hotels. Now, along with air conditioning and courtesy breakfast, you can search for hotels that welcome gays. Some of the listings seem a bit arbitrary. In New York City, for instance, the Hilton New York makes the gay cut, but not the Bowery hotel. In Miami, the Standard makes the list but the new W doesn’t. Still, where Expedia’s new gay store really distinguishes itself is in far-flung destinations. In the United Arab Emirates, there’s only one gay-friendly hotel listed, Aloft Abu Dhabi. There are no gay-friendly hotels, according to the site, in Africa.

Vancouverite, Posted: 4/28/2010, 5:10 PM Police are blaming geo-tagging Iphone app Grindr available on Apple Itunes for a sexual assault on a 15-year-old boy. Bren Tynan, 54, from Vancouver was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. Police said the suspect met the victim through geo-social networking app Grindr which allows app users to detect other users who are in proximity and converse with them. “The victim told police he met the suspect through a geo-social networking application called “GRINDR.” which is a social networking tool that targets gay and bisexual men,” said Cpl. Marlene Morton. “Its basic concept is to connect the user to other gay and bisexual men who are nearby,” she said. “The application works on mobile devices that have a built-in GPS function,” she added. RCMP’s sex crimes unit Sgt. Jeanette Thiesen cautioned parents to be aware of what their children are doing. “Advances in technology and social networking make it easier for our children to come into contact with individuals who may try to harm them or take advantage of them,” said the North Vancouver cop.

KTLA-TV (Calif.), Posted: 4/19/2010, 1:24 PM VIDEO: A man charged with kidnapping, carjacking and robbing a gay man he met on online social networking sites is scheduled to appear in court Monday, officials said. Angel Ayala, who has an "extensive history of violence," was on parole for carjacking when he was arrested Friday, according to Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins. Ayala was expected to be arraigned Monday on charges of kidnapping, robbery and carjacking. Hermosa Beach detectives determined Ayala contacted a male Asian Hermosa Beach resident on April 1 through a social networking site, then met the victim at the victim's apartment. Police said Ayala had a handgun and told the victim to put a television, computer and camera into the victim's vehicle. Ayala then demanded the man withdraw money from an ATM, police said. He eventually ordered the victim out of the car in El Segundo, and the victim then called Hermosa Beach police. His car was later recovered in Los Angeles at an undisclosed location. Police identified Ayala as the suspect through fingerprints found in the victim's home and vehicle. Police haven't released the name of the victim or the social networking site, and it wasn't clear how long Ayala and the victim knew each other.

It's unclear whether Apple's move is part of last month's purge of "adult" apps, but users looking to download it are being met with zero results. Those who have already downloaded the app should still find it in working order — removing the app only deletes it from the App Store, but doesn't appear to inhibit its usage. Grindr's blog hasn't been updated with any info, but its founder Joel Simkhai has made efforts to keep the app within Apple's official rules, which prohibit adult information being posted publicly in an app (i.e. as your main profile photo), but exchanged X-rated photos in a private chat is allowed. To celebrate its one-year anniversary, Grindr told members it was "throwing over 50 Grindr birthday parties around the globe between March 23rd and 29th. From South Korea to the United Kingdom, and Australia and the United States, there will be parties over 30 cities around the world making this truly a global event." (Whether George Michael was going to participate is anyone's guess.)

The body that decides on the availability of new web addresses will reconsider the case for allowing .xxx and decide on others, including .gay and .god on Friday in Nairobi. The suffix .xxx, aimed at adult websites, had previously been approved, but the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), reversed that decision in 2007 after a concerted lobbying campaign from conservative groups in America. Two organizations are also campaigning for control of the .gay domain name. Much like “.com” or “.org” — “.gay” would appear at the end of web-sites wishing to appeal to or advertise their connection to the GLBT community. Businesses, non-profits, GLBT blogs and other websites with Gay links could use the “.gay” suffix to conspicuously promote their homo bona fides. In New York, former Details and Star magazine editor Joe Dolce has launched the DotGayAlliance. “The .GAY top-level domain,” Dolce’s group says, “will provide concentrated Internet real estate for companies to showcase their gay efforts.” Dolce says his group’s business model is based on the plan behind the Al Gore-backed “.eco” registration campaign. And 51 percent of its profits will be earmarked for GLBT charities worldwide. In California, meanwhile, dotGAY debuted in June — a three-years-in-the-making effort by Berlin-born/Europe-based, heterosexual business man Alexander Schubert, who has worked for years in the domain-naming industry. dotGAY, too, says it will have a philanthropic component — initially pegged at 50 percent of profits, but soon to be more generously revised (note Dolce’s 51 percent profit donation promise).

A man going under the name of “Johnbose” was using a picture of Causer for his profile on QueerPersonals.co.uk. Causer died in August 2008, after being brutally attacked at a house party in Huyton. His murder was investigated as a homophobic attack and James O’Connor, 20, from Runcorn was sentenced to life after pleading guily to Causer’s murder. Marie Causer from Whiston, Merseyside told the Liverpool Echo: “I logged on to Mickey’s tribute page on Facebook and couldn’t believe it when I saw that someone has posted Johnbose’s profile on it to expose him. That picture is on Mickey’s Facebook page, but you have to be a friend of his to see it. I also have the picture on my computer at home. “I just can’t believe someone would stoop this low. If they got it from Mickey’s page they would have seen the tributes to him. I don’t know who this person is and I’m worried what his motives are for not using his own pictures. It’s just sick and brings back all of the pain of losing Mickey. Who knows what this guy wants from the people who may have contacted him.”

Brisbane’s Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Association told the Courier-Mail that lots of trans people wanted another option. Group spokeswoman Shelley Argent said: “They should definitely do it and they’d be quite surprised by how many people there are in the community who are transgender that do use Facebook.” However, some of those commenting on the article argued that the majority of trans people preferred to describe themselves as their acquired gender. One wrote: “Being a transgender person myself, why the hell would I select transgender, when I know what sex I identify as?” Facebook product manager Naomi Gleit said users had the choice of removing references to their gender entirely from their accounts and profiles.

Xtra (Canada), Posted: 3/8/2010, 3:17 PM Facebook has once again censored a post-op photo of Dominic Scaia's bare chest — the same photo that got him banned from Facebook in December, for which he later received an apology. Earlier this month, Facebook said it re-evaluated its policy concerning graphic imagery after Scaia's top surgery photos were censored. Scaia is a female-to-male (FTM) transsexual. In what was considered a victory for transgendered rights, a spokesperson for Facebook told Xtra on Jan 15 that Scaia could re-upload his photos, citing the importance of raising awareness about trans issues. Five days later, Scaia received a personal apology from Facebook, admitting the company's "errors." But on Jan 29, Scaia noticed that one of the photos he had posted to the Facebook group, "Stop Transphobia on Facebook - Un-ban Dominic Scaia" was missing. The photo was also missing from his profile. Scaia then received a message from Facebook telling him the photo violates the site's terms. "Are you kidding me?" says Scaia. "We just went through this whole thing, and I thought it was over. I thought this wasn't going to happen again and obviously it's because someone reported the photo."

The Register (U.K.), Posted: 3/8/2010, 9:26 AM Microsoft's Bing search engine blocks out "sexually explicit" results and gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender queries in Arab countries, claimed the Open Net Initiative late last week. The Arab version of Bing turned its nose up at "homosexuality", "gay" and "lesbian" keywords. "Bing does not offer users of the 'Arabian countries' version the option to toggle SafeSearch on/off. This option is available for Bing instances tailored to some other countries," said the ONI. The group carried out a test in January of Bing as intended for Middle Eastern sensibilities and found that it filtered Arabic and English words related to saucy material available online. A message popped up that read: "Your country or region requires a strict Bing SafeSearch setting, which filters out results that might return adult content," claimed the ONS when its researchers typed in a query for something a bit racy or homosexual via the Arab version of Bing. Bing also hides English keywords that "could yield sexually explicit websites", claimed the ONI. Filtered queries on that list included “sex”, “fuck”, “penis”, “sodomy”, “homo”, “sexual”, “sexy”, “clitoris” and “anal”, but surprisingly not “vagina”, which is presumably a more palatable term for a lady's garden in Microsoft's vision of the Arab world. According to the report Bing doesn't force search settings based on IP addresses, making it easier for the surfer to bypass filtering by choosing versions of the search engine intended for more freewheelin' countries.

Namely, in "stealing" Manhunt's tagline that's a play on Don't Ask Don't Tell. "Fabulis has been extremely vocal – in video and in print – about the fact that they are definitely NOT some tawdry hookup site where guys go to get laid," Manhunt's publicist emails us. "Strange then, that in their latest push email, the day after their launch, they stole the Manhunt tag line that has been plastered all over Manhattan, up and down 8th Avenue, for the past 6 months. If the site is so 'fabulis', can’t they come up with a tag-line that hasn’t been used for months by the 'oh-so-sleazy' Manhunt?" Fabulis' Bradford Shellhammer (who happens to be Queerty's original editor) responds: "fabulis is extremely flattered that Manhunt, a site that claims to have 2 Million subscribers, would even care about our little ol' start-up. They're obviously aware that Don't Ask, Don't Tell has been around much longer than their ad. We support the DADT repeal 100% and I assume you've read this editorial written by fabulis' Advisory Board Chair Richard Socarides in The Washington Post. Maybe Manhunt inspired Richard to pen it? Jason's email was playing on DADT, not Manhunt. Why would one look at their ad's text anyway? That naked guy makes the text irrelevant and makes really clear what Manhunt is all about. With that said, again, we're quite flattered the big guys have gotten a rise from our little site and we're thankful they're helping spread the word of fabulis. We're quite honored."
