It was the way the language was crafted - particularly the "barrage of homosexuality" portion - that gave me pause. No one forced Herremans to write that or share it. No one overheard him say it at a party or took it out of context. He sat down and typed those words himself, then put it on the Internet for everyone to see. I tweeted him directly and asked for a comment on the record (which was sort of redundant considering all this happened in a forum open to the public). I also asked if he wanted to take back what he said or apologize for his comments. "

Outsports, Posted: 6/28/2010, 4:02 PM Openly gay former NFL player Esera Tuaolo was arrested last weekend after he turned himself in to police in Minnesota. He was charged with domestic assault and disorderly conduct. Outsports spoke with Tuaolo at length today about the incident, and he offered this statement: "This is a private situation that has gotten blown out of proportion by the media. My personal relationship is very dear to my heart, and it upsets me deeply that this private matter now has to be played out in front of the public. I love my boyfriend, and I am now focused on my loving family; I ask everyone for privacy as we work through this." He also clarified that the person in question is not his ex-partner and father of his children, Mitchell Wehrley. However, Tuaolo and the other man are in a loving relationship. Tuaolo said there is more to the story than what is being reported by the media, and that he looks forward to telling the full story at the appropriate time.

Details of the altercation are few but the Pioneer Press sheds some light on the basics: "According to the incident report, Ramsey County sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 5:45 p.m. Sunday on a report of a domestic assault. Tuaolo is accused of assaulting the person near the 300 block of County Road 96 in North Oaks. It is unclear who the alleged victim was. Ramsey County sheriff's office spokeswoman Holli Drinkwine said the office would not release further details, and any additional information would have to go through the North Oaks city attorney charging the case. The city's prosecuting attorney could not be reached Friday. According to court records in the case, a judge gave Tuaolo a domestic abuse-related no-contact order with the victim. Tuaolo was released on $2,000 bail Monday. John Holler of the "Viking Update" asks a question related to the case: "If the case goes to trial, it will be interesting to see how the judicial process views a case of same-sex domestic violence. Since there aren’t many high-profile same-sex domestic assault cases on the record, this could serve as something of a landmark case."

That's why it was surprising to see the interview Tressel recently gave to Outlook Columbus, a local gay newspaper. During Saturday’s retreat, MSSU Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman was discussing changes the athletics department has made to give a more consistent appearance, including revamping the school’s lion logo before the start of the 2007-08 school year. Ansley voiced his approval for the change during the meeting by saying, “We went from the f-- lion to the ferocious lion.” Board Chairman Rod Anderson immediately looked at reporters who were covering the retreat meeting at the university and said, “That’s off the record.” In a written statement Monday, Ansley apologized to students, faculty, staff and administrators for any offense, and expressed remorse for his actions. “I have always thought of myself as a tolerant man,” he wrote. “Yet the fact that I spontaneously made the comment has caused me pause. So Fujita was not shy Tuesday about entering two Super Bowl debates that have little to do with his team’s game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. At issue are two Super Bowl television commercials, one about abortion, the other about gay rights. The first ad — which will be shown on CBS — is an antiabortion message from Focus on the Family that includes Tim Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida. The other ad — which was rejected by CBS — is for ManCrunch, a gay dating service. Fujita has spoken out before in favor of abortion rights and gay rights. “It’s just me standing up for equal rights,” Fujita said. “It’s not that courageous to have an opinion if you think it’s the right thing and you believe it wholeheartedly.” The Tebow ad suggests that Tebow’s mother was advised about having an abortion when she was pregnant with him, but chose instead to give birth. They went back to his condo, where Green, 27, assaulted her, she charges. He then got "extremely agitated and threatening," according to court documents, and warned: "This never happened. You'd better not tell." In the local case, Mavilia says she was dehumanized after being arrested for trespassing in a Manhattan housing complex on Oct. 30, 2008.

The 30-second spot, which carries an estimated $3 million price tag, features the outspoken Tim Tebow and his mother. It is likely to address Tebow’s anti-abortion beliefs rather than a specifically anti-gay angle. Nevertheless, One Orlando has joined a coalition of women’s groups that includes the New York-based Women’s Media Center and the National Organization for Women in protest of CBS’s decision to air the ad. Mary Meeks, a spokeswoman for One Orlando, encouraged "all fair-minded citizens" to join her organization in condemning Tebow’s participation in the ad by contacting the network directly. While she had not heard a response from CBS as of Monday, she said many members of her organization had already contacted the network’s New York headquarters.

Police said the two men, Scott Coy, 29, and Darren DeMeio, 23, were wrestling shirtless in their boxer shorts when they tumbled out a window from a room in the Delta Atrium section around 4:15 a.m. "These are really substantial, weather-resistant, double-paned plate glass windows. So (it's a) very strange, unusual occurrence for someone to literally come crashing through them and down onto the ground below," said Kim Keelor, Opryland Hotel spokeswoman. Coy suffered a pelvic and femur fracture and is in critical condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center. DeMeio suffered a broken vertebrae and is listed in stable condition. If you're upset about CBS running an anti-abortion issue ad during the Super Bowl after years of rejecting ads from gay and lesbian advocacy groups, the last thing you should do is defend the idiocy from "ManCrunch." The gay male dating site might be just the thing for guys looking for that special someone. But taking a stand against the rejection of its ad should not be elevated to lunch counter status. AtlanticWire tipped me off to the charges of "blatant discrimination" and "disgust" on the left. This reaction would be more warranted if CBS had rejected an ad from, say, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which is fighting to overturn the nonsensical ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military. The Senate Armed Services Committee will be holding hearings today to explore doing so. A powerful issue ad during this Sunday's big game that touted the patriotism, heroism and love of country of some of the nearly 14,000 who have been kicked out because of who they are could change the debate on this issue. Defending an ad from a company that says it's "Putting the man back in romance" does nothing to advance gay rights.
