BBC, Posted: 7/19/2010, 1:46 PM Doctors are advising football fans who went to the World Cup in South Africa to check their HIV status if they had unprotected sex on their trip. Up to 25,000 England fans recently returned from South Africa, where about six million people have HIV. More than two-thirds of heterosexual men and a quarter of women who contract HIV do so through holiday sex. An awareness campaign is urging those who may have put themselves at risk to visit their local sexual health clinic. The campaign - 'Beer Goggle Johnny's Guide to Sexual Health' - has been launched by Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital, but is backed by national organisations. Dr Steve Taylor, sexual health and HIV consultant at Heartlands Hospital, said nearly one in five young adults living in South Africa were infected with the virus, and in some areas it could be as high as one in three. "During the festivities if holiday makers had unprotected sex it is more important than ever to get themselves checked out on their return," he said. "Although the public are more aware of the dangers of unsafe sex these days, we are not seeing people putting this into practice, which is worrying. It's while on holiday, as people relax, soak in the sun and consume alcohol, the chance of having unprotected sex is increased. We want holiday makers to take precautions, pack condoms in their suitcase and attend sexual health screenings on their return if they are unsure." |

The latest: Back in May, before the tournament began, team coach and famed former player Diego Maradona (right) made an unusual promise: If Argentina returns from South Africa as the world champions, he will run naked around the Obelisk located in the heart of Buenos Aires. Not that running naked is gay. But then came other comments by Carlos Bilardo, another former player and the team's current General Manager. Appearing on a television news magazine show aired on June 4th, Dr. Bilardo, who is also a former physical therapist, was a bit bawdy and funny as heck. Invited to talk on the topic of sex and soccer, Dr. Bilardo addressed whether players should have sex the day before a game, whether they masturbated in the locker rooms and whether there was an appropriate sexual position between an older man and a younger woman. The clincher came just as Dr. Bilardo was getting ready to end the interview and walk out of the studio. "Any promises Carlos, or not?" host Matias Marín asked him, "Diego [Maradona] said if he emerges the champion, [he'l run] naked to the Obelisk." I don’t mind at all. I am proud of that. I love fashion, and I think so many gay people have amazing style. So that is a compliment to me. I really don’t know why people are so interested. I just made a decision that I won’t talk about it." The Swede is perhaps best known for appearing as an underwear model for Calvin Klein. Ljungberg is single and lives alone in an 8,500-square-foot house on a lake near Seattle, and there was no mention of a girlfriend anywhere in the story (but a couple of references to his dog). I was a bit confused on his answer to the gay question. What does “I won’t talk about it” mean? He won’t discuss what his sexual orientation is? Or the rumors? And does “I’m proud of that” refer to being proud to be thought gay? He has been more expansive in other interviews. For example, in reaction to being named the hottest football stud by a gay magazine, he did say: “I am not gay. If I was I would just say I was and it wouldn’t bother me.” Maybe he just got sick of answering the question and doesn’t care what people think. |

Amid some unease about the content of the hard-hitting video, produced by advertising agency Ogilvy to a brief agreed by the FA itself, football diversity campaign group Kick It Out and gay rights group OutRage, Thursday's planned launch of the film at Wembley Stadium has been cancelled. The campaign had been in development for almost two years and had been billed as an important moment in an embryonic drive to tackle homophobia among players, fans and administrators. "This last-minute cancellation is a big disappointment. It has thrown the Football Association's commitment to tackling homophobia into disarray," said OutRage campaigner Peter Tatchell. |

The centrepiece of the three-week long event is a football tournament with 58 youth teams. But this year’s event has been overshadowed by controversy after Erkut Ergiligür, a footballer at the traditional Berlin club Türkiyemspor, said he no longer wants to advertise for Respect Gaymes after facing continuing discrimination for appearing on the event’s poster. The poster, which is plastered all over the city, shows Ergiligür posing shirtless, a leather ball in his hands with the event’s motto “Show Respect for Gays and Lesbians” scrawled across it. The same poster was used to advertise Respect Gaymes last year too. But the 21-year-old Ergiligür, who has Turkish citizenship, told Berlin daily Die Tageszeitung that he had to put with constant harassment and slurs in his private life after posing for it. “I’m really pissed off. After removing many key individuals and groups from its highly effective tackling homophobia working group, it has now suddenly postponed this week's planned launch of its groundbreaking anti-homophobia video advert. While the FA and other national football associations have long challenged racism, the video is the first high-profile attempt to give homophobia the red card. A world first for football, it's release this week would have given the FA huge prestige. The video was due to be unveiled at Wembley Stadium, with a fanfare of publicity and the backing of FA chairman, Lord Triesman. The plan was to put it on YouTube, do a viral campaign via the internet and get all professional clubs to broadcast it on stadium screens at half-time. The last-minute postponement came just days before the launch, causing dismay among football and gay groups who were backing the project, including the football diversity and equality campaign, Kick It Out, the gay rights groups OutRage! and the Gay Football Supporters Network. Although there are fears that the video might be quietly shelved, the FA insists that the launch has been delayed, not cancelled. |
