Associated Press (AP), Posted: 6/16/2010, 10:45 PM Charges against a Georgia man charged with threatening singer Elton John were dismissed on the day a trial was scheduled to begin. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams dismissed the charges against Neal Horsley on Monday. The 65-year-old Horsley was charged with making terroristic threats, criminal defamation and using the Internet to disseminate threats. Prosecutors say Horsley posted threats against John online and that he picketed outside John's Atlanta condominium with a sign that said "Why Elton John Must Die." John apparently raised Horsley's ire when he told an interviewer that he believed Jesus was gay. The judge said Monday that Horsley's actions didn't warrant criminal charges.

Washington Post, Posted: 6/10/2010, 10:50 AM Zev Chafets, who has ridden the publicity train for his new, sympathetic biography of Rush Limbaugh into a gig as Limbaugh's emissary to the rest of the media, explains why the talk show host booked Elton John to play his wedding -- for $1 million: "On some social issues, like abortion, Limbaugh is a conventional conservative. On others he sounds a lot like Barack Obama. In an interview last summer, he told me that he regards homosexuality as most likely determined by biology, considers other people’s sex lives to be none of his business and supports gay civil unions. I’m pretty sure that Elton John’s sexual orientation never even crossed Limbaugh’s mind." Honestly, I'm more surprised that John took the gig because of his often-stated disgust with how the media treated Hillary Clinton in 2008. If anti-gay rhetoric hasn't played much of a role in Limbaugh's show, sexism against liberal women certainly has. I think liberal anger at John for playing the wedding was more of an issue than conservative confusion about Limbaugh. But Chafets gets to one of the reasons gay marriage has faded a bit as a motivating issue for Republicans, even if it's a winner at the polls. The cosmopolitan conservatives who make up much of the pundit class simply don't get exercised about gay issues.

Sir Elton's fee: $1 million, the report notes. Amid dozens of giant bouquets of white roses, reports the Palm Beach Post, guests at the wedding included former Bush adviser Karl Rove; actor-politician Fred Thompson; former Kansas City Royals slugger George Brett; Fox News commentator Sean Hannity; former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani; New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft; former Clinton adviser James Carville and his wife, GOP analyst Mary Matalin; and golfer Tom Watson, among others. The couple met six years ago, while she was running a charity golf tournament and Limbaugh was in the process of divorcing for the third time. Rogers is a direct descendant of President John Adams, and her father attended the U.S. Naval Academy with the future Arizona Senator (and 2008 Republican Presidential candidate) John McCain, reports NewsCore.

Islamists in the North African kingdom were outraged by the gay pop star's visit, while the royal palace, government and his many fans supported his appearance. Authorities had beefed up security with thousands of police and plainclothes officers patrolling the concert. No violence was reported, despite calls from The Justice and Development Party, or PJD, Morocco's largest authorised Islamist group, for the show to be stopped. "This singer is famous for his homosexual behaviour and for advocating it," said Mustapha Ramid, a leader and spokesman for the PJD, the country's biggest opposition party. "We're a rather open party, but promoting homosexuality is completely unacceptable," he said. Mr Ramid said that homosexuality was against Muslim values, and he feared the British singer would "encourage the phenomenon" and be a bad influence for Moroccan youth. But in a sign of Sir Elton's popularity, several thousand of his fans appeared to know his lyrics by heart even though most people in this French and Arabic speaking country know little or no English. Moroccan officials dismissed the calls to ban Sir Elton from performing. "We deal with artists and intellectuals for what they do, without taking into account their private life," said El Hassan Neffali, an organiser of the Mawazine Festival. "Somebody's private life is one thing, and their art or creative activities are another." The tension over the concert is part of a tussle between conservatives and modernisers in a nation that criminalises homosexuality but has long been famous for a swinging party scene. 'How do we allow a gay, who wants to ban religions, claimed that the prophet Eissa (Jesus) was gay and calls for Middle Eastern countries to allow gays to have sexual freedom,' head of the Egyptian Musician Union, Mounir al-Wasimi told the German Press Agency dpa. The pop superstar, 63, stirred controversy after his remarks to US celebrity news magazine Parade in February, where he said 'Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you're as good as dead,' after saying he believed Jesus was 'gay'. Al-Wasimi said that he has begun coordinating with security bodies to ban John's concert, saying that the union is the only body 'authorized to allow performances by foreign singers in Egypt.' In 2008, Elton John performed in the United Arab Emirates to a crowd of more than 13,000 fans. Although some human rights activists claim homosexuality is spreading in Egypt, the topic is a taboo in the country. In 2008, a lesbian scene in an Egyptian film set in Cairo's slums caused an uproar. In 2001, police raided a 'gay' floating disco in Cairo. Around 20 of the 52 arrested were jailed for 'habitual debauchery' and 'obscene behavior.'

Elton says he’s been deeply affected and traumatized by the death of a man he had a relationship with, before he met and married David Furnish. “Years back I had a relationship, and I had absolutely no idea in the world he was going to do this… he threw himself under a truck,” said the 64 year old singer, “There was so much grief.” “He was so tortured by the conflicting views between his sexuality and his strong religious beliefs that he chose to take his own life,” David Furnish, Elton’s lover and husband said in a recent interview. ”It is very sad indeed.” Sir Elton John, who is worth an estimated £175 million said it was his grief for the former lover that had inspired him to give financial support for a New York stage play that opened last week. Elton and David are also producers of the play, Next Fall, which tells the tale of a gay relationship between a young Christian from the southern states of America and a non-believer. “It’s the right timing for this,” David commented, “The religious divide between Right and Left has gotten wider, and so the rights of gay people never got back to where it was heading.”

Associated Press (AP), Posted: 3/14/2010, 10:45 AM A Georgia man who posted a video of himself on the Internet holding a sign that said "Elton John must die" has been arrested for making terroristic threats. Neal Horsley, 65, was arrested early Wednesday in Carrollton, about 50 miles west of Atlanta, said Atlanta Police Sgt. Curtis Davenport. He would not say who Horsley is accused of threatening, but Horsley's son, Nathan, said he thought the arrest was connected to the video about the musician. In the video posted Feb. 28 on YouTube, Horsley held the sign in front of a building where he said John has a condo. John's publicist, Fran Curtis, confirmed that John has an Atlanta apartment but declined further comment. Horsley was upset that John, who is gay, told Parade magazine in an interview last month that he thought Jesus was a "compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems." "What Elton John has done is desecrated the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, blasphemed the Lord Jesus Christ," Horsley said in the video. Horsley founded the Creator's Rights Party and has declared himself a candidate in the 2010 governor's race.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue issued a sharp rebuke in
response to comments Elton John made in a Parade magazine interview
suggesting Jesus Christ was a "compassionate and super-intelligent gay
man." "Jesus was certainly compassionate, but to say He was
'super-intelligent' is to compare the Son of God to a successful
game-show contestant. More seriously, to call Jesus a homosexual is to
label Him a sexual deviant,' said Donohue a longtime critic of gay
rights. The gay pop singer said in an interview over the weekend that
his remarks were taken out of context and he was making no claim about
whether Jesus was gay as a historical fact, but was discussing the way
he imagines him to be. Donohue nonetheless sees Elton as a hopeless
case. "If we thought we could persuade him to issue an apology, we
would try," Donohue said. "But given his recidivism, we won’t even
bother to ask. One thing is clear: someone needs to straighten John
out. "

*VIDEO after the jump*: Elton John blamed Parade magazine for quoting out of context his opinion that Jesus "was a superintelligent, compassionate gay man." The gay pop singer said the truncated quote fails to explain that he was describing the way in which he thinks about Jesus, not his view about the sexuality of Jesus Christ as a historical figure. "Parade magazine did a kind of a sneaky thing and put it on their website that I said this," John told Chicago's WGN-TV. According to John, he made the comment "as part of the conversation during the interview," but he apparently didn't think this was going to be included in the article. "I don't really want to cause a controversy, and I didn't know it was going to be a sidebar to an article that was a great article, and I think Parade have been a bit sneaky about that"
ELTON JOHN: Well, let me clarify the situation first of all. It's not actually in the interview in Parade magazine. Parade magazine did a kind of a sneaky thing and put it on their website that I said this. And I, I might have said this as part of the conversation during the interview. And the interviewer did a wonderful job. And I'm very, very happy with the article in Parade magazine. I think everybody's individual faith is their own business, and I do believe in Jesus, and I believe that he was a compassionate person, and I see him as, from my point of view, and that's just my point of view, and I'm not, as a compassionate gay person. Someone who was persecuted. Someone who forgave people. And, and that's how I see him. He could have easily been Jeannie White, Ryan White's mother, you know, who went through that awful thing. It's just I identify in my mind as someone like that...Everybody's idea of faith is their own business. And I think as long as you do believe in someone wonderful, and someone who was such a great person as Jesus Christ, and someone who was compassionate and forgiving, then that's all I'm saying. I'm not saying to everyone that he definitely was gay. That's how I see him. That's my idea of faith.
Everyone has their own idea. If I offended anybody, I don't see why they should be offended by it because I'm not saying that's how he definitely was. And, you know, we each have our own idea of what religion should be and our faith should be. And I, I do believe in Jesus Christ, and I do believe he was a wonderful man. And that's my view of him. And, and I don't, I don't really want to cause a controversy, and I didn't know it was going to be a sidebar to an article that was a great article. And I think Parade have been a bit sneaky about that. But I can't do anything about it, and I'm afraid I'm a bit of a lightning rod for these situations.
