''And when we got out of the car she was immediately distant and unfriendly and then she said, 'It's a double room', and we said 'Yes'. ''She said, 'It's a large double bed in a double room' and we said, 'yes', and then she said it was against her convictions to let us stay.'' He went on: ''We said it was illegal to discriminate against people who stay in hotels because that's all we knew at the time and she said it was her private home and it was against her convictions. ''She said she was sorry and she was polite in a cold way and she was not abusive, so we asked our money back and she gave it to us.''

Three Catholic bishops told worshippers that they were taking the case of the Catholic Care adoption agency to the High Court on Wednesday because they were fighting for the rights of vulnerable children to a loving family. They said that the closure of the adoption agency, which finds new homes for about 20 ‘difficult-to-place’ children each year, would represent the loss of an ‘effective and well-respected resource’. The agency, which serves the dioceses of Leeds, Middlesbrough and Hallam in South Yorkshire, is the only one of 11 Catholic adoption agencies in the country to continue to fight the Sexual Orientation Regulations (SORs). The law outlawed discrimination against gay couples in the provision of goods and services and was pushed through Parliament in 2007 in spite of protests from leaders of all the mainstream religious faiths.

Martyn Hall, who lives with civil partner Steven Preddy, has lodged a county court claim for £5,000 in damages, alleging 'direct discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation' against the hotel owners, Peter and Hazelmary Bull. The pair, from Bristol, booked a room at the Chymorvah Private Hotel in Marazion, Cornwall, last September, but when they arrived were told that only married heterosexual couples could stay in the same room. However, under the new Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007, it is unlawful to refuse a person goods or facilities on the grounds of their sexuality. Mr Preddy and Mr Hall told the hotel manager, Bernie Quinn, that he was acting illegally before leaving the premises and reporting the incident to police. Mr and Mrs Bull have defended their policy, which bans all unmarried couples – both heterosexual and homosexual – from sharing a bed.
