Sao Paulo Pride marred by gay tourist's murder
Club Whirled, Posted: 6/12/2007, 11:07 AM
QUICK LOOK:Police are investigating as a possible anti-gay hate crime the brutal murder of gay French tourist Gregor Landouar outside a well-known gay hangout shortly after the biggest Gay Pride parade in world history -- indeed, only a few blocks from where the parade happened. Landouar was visiting São Paulo for the Pride festivities and had met three other gay men at Ritz and the four of them were heading out to another gay hangout when four men dressed in "skater clothing" approached them without saying anything and stabbed Landouar repeatedly, fleeing afterwards. Folha also reports, quite sadly, that despite the media attention here, the French government has still not been able to locate Landouar's family in France to notify them of his death.

Enrique Iglesias serenades guy at London's G-A-Y
Towleroad, Posted: 6/4/2007, 11:30 AM
QUICK LOOK:Enrique Iglesias made a visit to G-A-Y nightclub in London on Saturday night and made one gay fan very happy. Normally when he performs the track "Hero," he invites a girl up on stage to serenade her, but given his audience, things were a bit different this time. The crowd went wild as Iglesias asked a young man on stage and unabashedly gave him the treatment.

A new Democratic frontrunner
Citizen Crain, Posted: 5/30/2007, 5:56 PM
QUICK LOOK:There may be three Democrats in the "top tier" of presidential candidates, but on gay issues we now have a clear frontrunner.  Judging by the position papers put out by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last week, it's clear that rival John Edwards is willing to go further on gay issues and is much stronger on the specifics. It’s true that a memoir out last week by political consultant Bob Shrum claims Edwards expressed his discomfort around “those people” — that would be us — when he first ran for U.S. Senate in 1988. But whether he’s evolved or converted since those days, he's got a comfortable lead on gay rights now.

Obama dragging his feet on gay rights
Andrew Sullivan, Posted: 5/13/2009, 1:35 PM
QUICK LOOK:I have a sickeningly familiar feeling in my stomach, and the feeling deepens with every interaction with the Obama team on these issues. They want them to go away. They want us to go away. Here we are, in the summer of 2009, with gay servicemembers still being fired for the fact of their orientation. Here we are, with marriage rights spreading through the country and world and a president who cannot bring himself even to acknowledge these breakthroughs in civil rights, and having no plan in any distant future to do anything about it at a federal level. Here I am, facing a looming deadline to be forced to leave my American husband for good, and relocate abroad because the HIV travel and immigration ban remains in force and I have slowly run out of options (unlike most non-Americans with HIV who have no options at all).

Reunite this married gay couple
Boston Globe, Posted: 8/27/2007, 11:04 AM
QUICK LOOK:Tim Coco, 46, runs a successful advertising agency in Haverhill, Mass. Six years ago he met Genesio Januario Oliveira, who was visiting Boston on vacation from his home in Brazil. The two fell in love and in 2005, under rights protected by the Massachusetts Constitution, they were married. Since then, they have lived happily and quietly in a Boston suburb with their dog, Q-Tip. Except that two weeks ago Oliveira was forced to return to Brazil under orders from the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals, which denied his application for the asylum status he hoped would allow him to stay in the United States with his husband. The couple needed to pursue the asylum route because their same-sex marriage is not recognized by the federal government, and federal laws supersede states' when it comes to immigration.

Should paper print soldier was gay in obit?
Washington Post, Posted: 3/29/2008, 12:12 PM
QUICK LOOK:What should a newspaper print about a person's most private life in a story after his death? The Post ran a story March 22 about the burial at Arlington National Cemetery of Army Maj. Alan G. Rogers, a decorated war hero killed in an explosion in Baghdad. The subject of much journalistic soul-searching, the story did not mention that Rogers's friends said he was gay and was well known in local gay veterans' circles. The Washington Blade, a gay-oriented newspaper, identified him as gay in a story Friday that was critical of The Post. For The Post, Rogers's death raised an unanswerable question: Would he have wanted to be identified as gay?

Navy treats gays like so much military trash
Pink News (U.K.), Posted: 3/15/2010, 2:20 PM
QUICK LOOK:Petty Officer Second Class Lewis Breland is waiting to be discharged from the US military after an investigation into his sexuality forced him to come out last year. He confessed his sexual orientation to civilian investigators after rumours began flying around his unit about an alleged sexual partner.

BY LEWIS BRELAND: There is no clearer indication that the United States military is behind in the times, clinging desperately to religious and reactionary nonsense, than in the way we treat our homosexual service members as so much military trash. I've been in the Navy since 2005. In that time, I've been advanced up to Petty Officer Second Class and my record is, to say the least, outstanding. My command is unhappy with having to discharge me, to lose a sailor, and having to tell a hard-working shipmate that they must quit the pursuit of their goals for relentless excellence in the Navy. While deployed on shore last year, an investigation into my sexuality was launched after rumours began going around my unit. When the civilian investigators asked my sexual orientation (which they can do since they are not military members), I was honest. One would imagine that honesty is something the military would value. As a matter of fact, the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, made it clear that honesty is what is really at stake by asking service members to lie about their sexuality.

Did the bareback time machine kill Chad Noel?
My Fabulous Disease, Posted: 4/7/2010, 5:08 PM
QUICK LOOK:Among the many online condolences to the family of Chad Noel (”Jim and Bonnie, so sorry to hear of the loss of your son…”) are glimpses of the boy this young man was, while growing up in the ironic hometown of Laramie, Wyoming (where Matthew Shepard lived and perished). Noel, 25, died last month, reportedly of AIDS-related complications. “I remember him playing with me in my pretend kitchen and being one of the only boys to not pick on me,” writes Kendra of her gay adolescent friend on the Laramie Boomerang’s online obituary page. “Chad was my Senior Prom date, it was truly one of the funnest nights of my life,” adds Rebecca. Reminiscences of his smile and humor abound in posted comments under his one-sentence death notice. Little did Rebecca know that her date would quickly become gay porn actor Donny Price (why is everyone who does a porn film a STAR?). Very quickly, in fact. He was only 18 years old when he made his first video for a studio specializing in scenes of unprotected sex (known as barebacking). And now, seven years later, the young man is dead of AIDS. How very 1985.

GLAAD slams FX show for bad gay 'science'
Good As You (G-A-Y), Posted: 6/24/2008, 1:09 PM
QUICK LOOK:On tonight's episode of the FX series "30 Days," anti-gay activist Peter Sprigg will be permitted to present his faith-based notions of gay life without any real push back. This according to GLAAD, who says via press release: "During the June 24 episode [of '30 Days'], entitled 'Same Sex Parenting,' Kati, a woman who opposes gay and lesbian parents and their families, lives for 30 days with gay parents Dennis and Thomas and their four adopted sons. Regrettably, the episode also features a defamatory statement by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay activist organization, who claims: 'Homosexuality is associated with higher rates of sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse, and those are all reasons for us to be concerned about placing children into that kind of setting.'" Making matters even worse, GLAAD claims that FX Networks has "refused to remove the defamatory content or, at minimum, address it during the course of the episode."

Prop 8 should cost Mormons tax exempt status
Huffington Post, Posted: 11/8/2008, 9:36 AM
QUICK LOOK:BY MARIO RUIZ: Given their history, Mormons know about being targeted for being different. Yet in a full-on offensive, the LDS Church mobilized in favor of California's Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that bans gay marriage. Mormons donated $19 million to the cause -- nearly four out of five dollars raised. And now that the initiative has passed, apparently Mormons want to play nice; an LDS Church leader called Wednesday for members to heal rifts caused by the campaign by treating each other with "civility, with respect and with love." Not. So. Fast. We are seeking to strip the Mormon church of its status as a religious organization. According to IRS law, "no organization, including a church, may qualify for IRC section 501(c)(3) status if a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation (commonly known as lobbying)."

Huckabee mauled by gay tiger over remark
Philadelphia Inquirer, Posted: 1/31/2008, 1:44 PM
QUICK LOOK:After making remarks in which he directly equated homosexuality with bestiality, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was attacked at the San Francisco Zoo by a gay tiger. Huckabee had scheduled a campaign stop at the zoo, where he made his controversial remarks about homosexuality and bestiality, not realizing that he was standing within earshot of a Bengal tiger with a homosexual lifestyle. According to onlooker Tracy Klujian, 27, "the way that tiger started growling during the speech, you could tell that it felt like it was being taunted."

Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Posted: 2/23/2007, 10:37 AM
QUICK LOOK:We live in a world where we grow up being taught that it is only acceptable for a boy and a girl to be together. So how do you think you would feel if as you grew older and more mature you started noticing people of the same sex as you, rather than the opposite? I can only imagine how hard it would be to come out as homosexual in today’s society. I think it is so wrong to look down on those people, or to make fun of them, just because they have a different sexuality than you. There is nothing wrong with them or their brain; they’re just different than you.

Clinton advised Kerry to back marriage ban
Politico, Posted: 5/30/2007, 11:59 AM
QUICK LOOK:Bob Shrum's book is really sort of a pile of unexploded ordnance, and the person who comes off as most indifferent to questions of gay rights isn't Edwards, but Bill Clinton. "Clinton, Kerry reported at the time, did suggest blunting Bush's appeal to cultural conservatives with a reprise of Clinton's Sister Souljah moment in 1992 when he'd denounced her call for violence against whites — and done it as conspicuously as possible in front of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition. Kerry, Clinton ventured, should consider defying Democratic interest groups by endorsing the Bush proposal for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage." Shrum reports that "this was a flip-flop too far for Kerry."

Time for a real apology from Richardson
La Opinión (en español), Posted: 8/18/2007, 2:34 PM
QUICK LOOK:When I heard Gov. Bill Richardson utter the word maricón, I almost couldn’t believe it. As a Latino gay man, I have seen time and time again how this and other hurtful words are used to degrade our identities, our gay identity as well as our Latino identity. As a Latino man, Gov. Richardson should have known better. Now as a presidential candidate, he has to do something about it. While Richardson has had a great record of supporting rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, the use of the word maricón has profound connotations in our Latino culture. It is used to demean gay people and brings a lot of hurt, not only to gays who are subject to homophobia, but to the people that use the word without remorse.

Tortured for being a gay couple in Iran
U.K. Gay News, Posted: 6/22/2007, 4:20 PM
QUICK LOOK:They are 26 and 24 years old, and they have been prosecuted by Iran because of their sexual orientation. I ask you, should we keep silent?  Should we paint a false picture of their daily life situation? Certainly silence is not an option. They received eighty lashes; I doubt that I would be able to endure one. I admire their courage. After receiving his punishment, one of the men asked the person who implemented this barbaric sentence whether or not he felt closer to his god by this savagery. The pictures were taken almost one month ago, and a month after they’ve lashed.  When I called them by phone of the first day, they were not able to talk. Because of the pain they could not even sleep.

Sister Wendy speaks out for gay marriage
Huffington Post, Posted: 12/8/2007, 9:43 AM
QUICK LOOK:Sister Wendy is the most adorable old lady on the face of the planet. She's also a genius art historian who graduated from Oxford and has this video series through BBC and PBS in which she goes to museums and talks about art. She has spoken out against the Vatican's position on gay marriage. "I believe in loyalty. We should respect our church, but never believe that the church has the last word," she explained. "The church is saying 'this,' but I believe that sooner or later 'this' will change. 'This' is not the mind of our Lord. God is all love. It's a delicate balancing thing. The Church has changed it's position over the years, and because the spirit is with the Church, in the end the Church will always get it right. But in the end. The spirit of the Church is the meaning of love, which hasn't yet, perhaps, been fully understood"

Elton's letter to Ryan White 20 years after death
Washington Post, Posted: 4/28/2010, 8:42 PM
QUICK LOOK:BY ELTON JOHN: Twenty years ago this month, you died of AIDS. I would gladly give my fame and fortune if only I could have one more conversation with you, the friend who changed my life as well as the lives of millions living with HIV. Instead, I have written you this letter. Dear Ryan, I remember so well when we first met. A young boy with a terrible disease, you were the epitome of grace. You never blamed anyone for the illness that ravaged your body or the torment and stigma you endured. When students, parents and teachers in your community shunned you, threatened you and expelled you from school, you responded not with words of hate but with understanding beyond your years. You said they were simply afraid of what they did not know. When the media heralded you as an "innocent victim" because you had contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, you rejected that label and stood in solidarity with thousands of HIV-positive women and men. You reminded America that all victims of AIDS are innocent. When you became a celebrity, you embraced the opportunity to educate the nation about the AIDS epidemic, even though your only wish was to live an ordinary life.

Watch: Barney on whether AIDS crisis is over
My Fabulous Disease, Posted: 4/20/2010, 2:04 AM
QUICK LOOK:A few weeks ago I spent the day at the Florida AIDS Walk, and it was striking how different it was from the Walks I attended years ago. Smiling faces, racial and ethnic diversity, baby strollers, and most of all a feeling of happiness and celebration. That’s progress, right? But when I speak of the AIDS “crisis mentality” being over for gay men like me, I’m treated like a heretic. I don’t mean to disrespect those who are suffering, or for the devastation that AIDS clearly continues to wreak on much of the world. But please, hear this: I lived through the 1980’s. I went to weekly funerals and lived in daily, mortal fear for my life. Friends stayed in my guest room on their way to hospice care, or simply died before making it that far. That was a crisis state, my friends, and I’m no longer living in it. The crisis, as I have known it, has passed. In this episode of the My Fabulous Disease video series, I chat about this post-crisis mentality with Rep. Barney Frank, arguably the most powerful gay man in America. His measured response may surprise you.

Is gay outrage over Rick Warren justified?
Newsweek, Posted: 12/19/2008, 11:02 PM
QUICK LOOK:Largely greeted with good will during the transition, President-elect Obama is getting a taste of hostility over his choice of the Rev. Rick Warren to deliver his inaugural invocation. A number of leading lesbian and gay voices, including Rep. Barney Frank, have criticized the selection of the megapastor, who has spoken out against same-sex marriage. Warren, in a statement Thursday, thanked Obama "for his courage to willingly take enormous heat from his base by inviting someone like me, with whom he doesn't agree on every issue, to offer the invocation. Hopefully individuals passionately expressing opinions from the left and the right will recognize that both of us have shown a commitment to model civility in America." In that vein, NEWSWEEK asked two members of the gay community to debate the Warren controversy. Chris Crain is a blogger and journalist who has written about Warren on his blog. Leah McElrath Renna is a psychotherapist and managing partner of Renna Communications who has covered the topic on The Huffington Post.

Couple torn apart by DOMA, bad economy
Huffington Post, Posted: 4/10/2009, 7:00 AM
QUICK LOOK:BY EMMA RUBY-SACHS: Stacy Beardsley and Karla Thomas met three and a half years ago at a friend's birthday party. Two months later, they were dating and now, three and half years after that night, they live together in a house in north Chicago. They are like any other couple. Two weeks ago Karla's entire department was eliminated due to cut costs and now, as a Trinidadian citizen on an H1B visa, she will have to leave the country once her employment terminates. She has only a few months to find a job that is willing to take on the burden and currently heavily publicized stigma of sponsoring a foreign worker on an H1B visa or she will be forced to return to Trinidad alone. Their story was supposed to go much differently. If Stacy and Karla were in an opposite-sex relationship they would be married and Stacy could sponsor Karla to remain in the country.

It was Sunday, May 27, 2007, the day planned to mark Moscow's annual Gay Pride commemoration. For the second consecutive year, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov had refused permission for the pride parade. Gay Pride should be a parade to affirm lesbian and gay rights and equality in Russian society. Instead, in Moscow it has become a day to attack lesbians and gays and to arrest them.
